Tararam - The History

It all began in the fall of 1996 when creator, Doron Raphaeli was contracted to compose an alternative outdoor performance for the local Israeli Performing Arts Festival in Acre. He immediately made a few calls to a number of talented drummers, percussionists, dancers and singers, many of which were former students of his, and together they began working on an innovative project called “Drumming on Junk”. Doron named this electrifying group “Tararam”, which is the Hebrew translation for “hubbub or commotion”.

Influenced by the new rhythmical genre that Britain’s Internationally acclaimed group "Stomp" had recently introduced, Doron added a new dimension to his creative ensemble by combining live musicians on stage with tightly choreographed movement sequences, drumming on non traditional objects, industrial tools, percussion and an old jalopy. The results were electrifying and Tararam soon became Israel’s newest hit.

Following Tararam’s ”Drumming on Junk”, the group was chosen to perform at the 1997 Israel Festival of Stage Arts where they received a series of excellent reviews and high profile exposure. Tararam has since put on a variety of performances while pursuing an intensive touring schedule around the world.

Over the years, the cast has grown, and although some of the old faces have been replaced with new ones, the group’s wild spirit and energetic finale of drumming ecstatically on an automobile has remained.

Tararam’s latest show “Extazira” features the definitive personalities and individual skills of its performers such as juggling, tap dancing, pantomime and theatrical antics. The entire cast move, dance, sing and drum in perfect harmony, as the show ranges from impressively dynamic to seductively intimate.

The show incorporates witty and comical scenes interwoven with brilliantly executed body drumming, live ethnic-flavored vocals and a variety of extraordinary sounds and rhythms that celebrate the world around us.
